New Beginnings!
Happy New Year!!! 2012 looks and feels like a year of possibilities for Las Golondrinas. The recent game of musical chairs the staff played last fall has a lot to do with it. People are in positions that offer a better fit for both the museum and themselves. The new Cuator of Collections, Dan Goodman has settled into his new position and has some big plans for the museum's collection, we look forward to his improvements! The creative juices are flowing and although 2011 was another record breaking year, 2012 is slated to surpass it.
Volunteer Training, on a series of Saturdays, Starts February 11th and runs through March 31st. There will be numerous talks about different departments, volunteer opportunities as well as the Ranch's history basics. If you would like to attend volunteer training as a new volunteer, please call the office at (505)-471-2261 and speak to Mike King.
The "Speaking of Traditions" three-part lecture series begins Thursday, January 26th at 7pm with "From Indian Trails to Statehood through the Art of Illustrator Ron Kil." This vibrant presentation will be introduced by the legendary Dr. Marc Simons and promises to be an entertaining retrospective of Ron Kil's amazing southwestern art.
February 23rd hosts speaker Rick Hendricks, New Mexico State Historian as he discusses the "Struggle to Statehood" - a look back on our centennial history.
On March 29th, Speaker John Barham will discuss "Tom Catron: New Mexico's First US Senator." All three lectures will take place at the Santuario de Guadalupe, downtown Santa Fe on the given Thursdays, at 7pm. Call (505)-471-2261 for details. Plan to arrive early as seats are limited and the Santuario fills up quickly. All three events are FREE of charge.
Civil War Weekend will kick off our programing season at the Ranch. "Battlefield New Mexico - The Civil War and More" will be held on May 5th & 6th from 10am - 4pm. 2012 is the 150th anniversary of the battles here in New Mexico and there will be a number of celebrations across the Southwest. There is a full schedule of state Civil War events listed under the May calendar of events listing on this site, along with a tentative schedule of events for the 5th & 6th. Las Golondrinas is proud to welcome the New Mexico National Guard and the New Mexico Civil War Commemorative Congress, who will participate in this season's events. Both soldiers of yesterday and today will come together for this exciting anniversary celebration.
Some other notable 2012 happenings include the scheduled release of the movie "Tiger Eyes" which was partially filmed at the museum in late fall, 2010. This story, based on the best selling Judy Blume book is based in New Mexico. As soon as a more specific date of release is posted, we will report. Also, the Ranch is now hosting light yoga for staff and volunteers in the Ed Center on Wednesday afternoons. The class is taught by Lynsey Pompei, daughter of volunteer Marcy Pompei and there is a small cost per class. Call the office (505)- 471-2261 and ask to speak with Madeline for specifics.

Harvest Festival
With an attendance of over 4,200 visitors this year, the Harvest Festival was a smash hit! We all enjoy this time of year on the ranch, and not just because it is the end of the season! Although things seem to be inherently dying in the fall, there is still a sense of life, through the color and the accomplishment of reaping the benefits of the planting we've carefully tended to through out the season. San Isedro blessed us with many different types of crops to harvest this year, including green and red chile, tomatoes, many different types of squashes and cucumbers, beans, corn, sorghum, and pumpkins.
We celebrated with a mass honoring San Isedro and procession through the property. As well as many different harvest activities like ristra stringing, bread making and tortilla making, stomping grapes for the wine production, husking and stripping the corn off the cob, pressing apples to make cider, roasting chile, and making molasses with the sorghum press. We also had both of the mills working to prepare the grains for the long winter ahead! This year's Harvest Festival was dedicated to Roberto "Bob" Baca who passed away late September.
Below are some pictures from Harvest Festival, taken by David Geary and Mary Ann Hart.

Mark your calendars for the [URLhttp://flic.kr/p/avLnfT:"End of season sale"] going on in the museum shop in conjunction with the La Cienega Studio Tour. The sale and studio tour will take place on Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend, November 26th and 27th. In addition to the wonderful things at the shop (of which everything will be on sale, 10%-50% off!!!) our very own Sean Paloheimo, the ranch's Director of Operations will be exhibiting and selling in the Education Center, adjacent to the shop. There will be refreshments and snacks for visitors in the Hacienda Exhibit Hall. The studio tour features a number of other artists around La Cienega, a map can be viewed on the tour's website.
In closing, we wanted to share this video made about Julia Gomez and the colcha work she creates here at the ranch.

Ren Fair Recap
The fourth annual Santa Fe Renaissance Fair, a partnership with Open Hands of Santa Fe was an amazing success! El Rancho de las Golondrinas had a record attendance with about 6,400 people over the two day weekend event. We look forward to next year's fair!
Next weekend, October 1st and 2nd will be our last weekend event, Harvest Festival. The Ranch is already littered with pumpkins and corn stalks in anticipation! There will be a procession for San Isedro, as well as chile ristra stringing, break baking and horse drawn wagon rides amidst the neon trees. Hope to see you there!
On a sad note, we lost one of our treasured volunteers last weekend, Roberto "Bob" Baca had a fatal heart attack on his way to volunteer on Saturday and passed away in his spanish colonial outfit. David Geary, a volunteer and close friend of Mr. Baca's made a tribute video in remembrance.

Fiestas and Renaissance Fair preview
Greetings! Last week we celebrated Fiesta here in Santa Fe... And last weekend Las Golondrinas had a fiesta of its own! Fiesta de los Ninos, our children's celebration! Below are some pictures from the event:

We all had a lot of fun and look forward to next year's event! Now we are franticly getting ready for Renaissance Fair... Its September 17th & 18th this year, just around the corner. The Santa Fe Renaissance Fair is a partnership with Open Hands a very worthy charitable organization in Santa Fe. Open Hands provides essential services to help frail elderly, disabled and the economically disadvantaged members of our community. Join their Facebook community here! We have partnered with them now for four years and and pretty sure this is going to be the best Renaissance Fair yet! Below are some pictures from last year's festivities! See you next weekend for the fourth annual Santa Fe Renaissance Fair!

What else is going on around the Ranch? The watermelons are ready for harvest! They will be available for a small donation ($2-$3) at the Renaissance Fair. They are so yummy! We met a small slithery friend over by the school house the other day. The goats greeted visitors in the Mountain Village. They were incredibly eager to meet new friends! Barney, one of the Ranch dogs, guards the bridge over to the Mountain Village.Also... The chamisa is in bloom! It is really adding some wonderful golden fall color to the museum.
Also our friends Theresa and Zeema Falzone are in a new reality show on HRTV (Dish Network channel 404) called America's Favorite Trail Horse! Its airing beginning September 13th at 6PM. You can view the show and vote for Theresa and Zeema at www.hrtv.com or www.actha.tv. They will be featured September 20th and need your votes! They spoke about coming to the events at Las Golondrinas in the filming. Vote for Zeema #223, our favorite trail horse on September 20th!
Till next time! Hope to see you out at the Ranch for the Santa Fe Renaissance Fair, September 17th & 18th!

This past weekend Las Golondrinas debuted its newest program, Survival: New Mexico. The program was about surviving in colonial New Mexico and featured archery & atlatl, building with adobe bricks, constructing shelters, flint knapping, hide tanning, gardening, building fires, etc. Below are some pictures taken from last weekend's event! Spanish Market & Summer Festival
The last weekend in July Las Golondrinas participated in the 60th Annual Spanish Market festivities in downtown Santa Fe. We were proud to present the Lenora Curtin Paloheimo Award for Excellence in Traditional Furniture. First place went to Andrew Garcia, second went to Fred Romero, and honorable mention went to Richard Prudencio. The museum also sponsors the El Rancho de las Golondrinas Award in Excellence in Traditional Tinwork. First place went to Nicolas Madrid, Second went to Richard Gabriel Jr., and honorable mention went to Kevin Burgess de Chavez. Over all in was a great market this year, beautiful works! Las Golondrinas always has a booth on the Plaza, staffed by volunteers. Russ Mooney eagerly showed kids how to play graces and hoops. The graces were quite popular! In return, the kids showed Russ how their toys worked. The weavers also drew a large crowd as they demonstrated their traditional technique to the visitors.
Amanda Crocker and Julie Anderson represented the Museum and the upcoming Renaissance Fair at the monthly meeting of the Santa Fe Hospitality Group, which happened to be hosted at the Santa Fe Opera. There was a great turn out and Julie made the two outfits. Visit her shop here. Of course, Amanda stole the morning! The same day we celebrated Sean's (our Director of Operations) 29th birthday!
Summer Festival took place the first weekend in August! We had a record turn out and everyone enjoyed the mountain man encampment, great activities and lectures, and of course, the horse shows featuring the famous Peruvian Pasos of La Estancia Alegre! We look forward to August 13th and 14th, next weekend, when we debut our newest event, Survival New Mexico! Hope to see you there!

Red, White and... WINE!
We hope everyone had a safe Independence Day holiday weekend. We had a great time at the Santa Fe Wine Festival, Saturday and Sunday! Despite the smoke from the fire still lingering in the Los Alamos area, the festival had a great turn out and everyone enjoyed the weekend, and the wonderful New Mexico wines! We had a new wine glass design this year, it was a big hit.
We haven't been effected, beyond some smoke, by the fires looming so close to the Ranch. Las Golondrinas is so lucky, and this situation has caused all of the local museums to really think about their own disaster preparedness. For those of you who would like to keep up with the fires around the state, check out nmfireinfo.com.
Viva Mexico! is coming up July 16th and 17th! This year's festivities are shaping up to surpass 2010. We are so excited to have the Voladores back, with the gracious support of the Mexican Consulate. If for some strange reason you missed the "Flying Men of Papantla" last year, this should be on the top of your list! For all of the event information, click here!
Why not enjoy a year of Las Golondrinas programs at a discounted rate? A Family Membership at the Ranch is only $50 and allows for your immediate family to get into the museum for a full calendar year (from purchase date.) This includes all of our special events as well as regular programing. The membership pays for itself in two visits. Take advantage of the new online membership purchasing options here! Get yours now and don't worry about the admission fees for Viva Mexico! Also keep an eye out for another fantastic Groupon deal in mid July, more to come on this.

Spring Festival!
Las Golondrinas had a record breaking Spring Festival this year, over 2,000 people attended! The mass and procession on Sunday was a big hit, Little RAMA, our new black and white lamb got blessed, along with his mother, they are doing fine!
In the beginning of the week we celebrated our new exhibit: Treasures from the Collection, with a members only reception. Red dog had a little too much fun and was spotted passed out on the front lawn. Everyone enjoyed themselves. The staff also celebrated the June birthdays with a Luau mid-month. Sisu really enjoyed herself.
The Ranch is proud to announce that there is free WiFi on the top of the half of the property now, come out and enjoy a picnic with free internet access! Here is a picture of the trench we dug for the hard wire to the access point. This was phase one, we still plan on boosting the signal inside the building more, since the adobe walls seem to interfere. This summer we will be developing an audio tour, in the form of a smartphone application. We'll keep you updated on that!
On Sunday, June 12th, the episode of "In Plain Sight" that was partially shot on the property in March aired, click here for a scene shot in the Madrid House. Altogether there was about 7 minutes of the Ranch in the final cut of the episode, including the Madrid House, the Big Mill, field in front of the mill and various other shots. We are very proud of the episode!
Next weekend will be the "Fiber Arts Festival: From Sheep to Blanket". It will be held on June 25th and 26th from 10 am to 4 pm. The schedule of events is posted here. We look forward to seeing you and your family this weekend!

Whats black & white and cute all over?
This little guy! The newest addition to the Ranch and couldn't be any cuter... The other two white lambs have joined the general sheep population and are doing fine. The chickens also have been moved to a special new home across from the sheep, by the Baca Placita. Stop by this area and see our new additions as they start their first year of Ranch life.
This weekend is our Spring Festival & Children's Fair, both Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be a whole slew of fun family activities including arts and crafts, tortilla making, sheep shearing and bread baking. There will be a special procession for San Ysidro and a mass to follow. Gates will open a bit early on Sunday for mass, come early to get a good seat. The complete schedule of events for this weekend is up in the calendar section of this website.
For the first time, we ran a special online promotion through Groupon for buy one get one free adult admission to the Spring Festival. It ran May 30th and 31st and did quite well with 161 Groupons sold, which translates into 322 people that might not have come to visit us otherwise. This is exciting for Las Golondrinas because Groupon reaches a different market and demographic than might have been reached through our traditional marketing efforts. We look forward to offering more great deals through out the season! Keep your eyes peeled!
Lastly, our large exhibit in the Hacienda Exhibit Hall (located inside the gift shop) opens tonight, with a small members only reception. It will showcase the best and most unique treasures from the Ranch's collection. Textiles, furniture, ceramics, tin & religious art, and agricultural tools. Also in the Hacienda Exhbit Hall is a special collection of carved wooden folk art animals from New Mexico. These facinating objects are graciously on loan to the museum for the season from a private Santa Fe collector. These two exhibits will be up for the remainder of the season, stop by and see them as you visit the Ranch.

New Additions
The biggest news this week would be the birth of our first lamb! Click here for another picture. It was born Tuesday night. There are a few more sheep expecting, so we'll keep you updated if there are any more babies. Our Facebook page is always up to date with whats happening around the Ranch as well. The baby chicks have become unrecognizable, and now pretty much look like adults. They will be a welcomed addition to the top of the Ranch this season. Visit them in the coup behind the General Store in the Baca Placita.
We've been putting in the hours in the Hacienda Exhibit Hall working on the Treasures Exhibit, which will be open to the public on June 4th. Make sure to stop and look at the interesting artifacts that the museum has in its collection.
We had one of the first Horno Baking classes this year, yesterday. The classes run through the season, on selected days. Click here for details or call the office at (505)-471-2261 for more information.

The War is Over...
Las Golondrinas would like to thank everyone for a eventful and successful Civil War weekend, and a great kick off to our season. Most everyone had fun, except for Beau, who wasn't a fan of the loud gunfire and spend this Saturday hiding under desks in the office. Some of the other dogs helped around the Ranch this weekend, Sarge talked to visitors in the information booth. Check out our Facebook for more Civil War pictures. Our next event will be our Spring Festival & Children's Fair, June 4-5th.
In other news, the invitation for the members only reception for "Treasures from the Collection," the new exhibit in the Hacienda Exhibit Hall got sent out. Amigos, look for yours in the mail, and if you are not a member yet, sign up online and get your invitation! We are feverishly working to finish before our early June deadline. The exhibit in the Founder's Room on the Pure Spanish Horse had its opening weekend along with Civil War weekend and had nothing but complements.
In the next few weeks we are looking forward to launching our wireless access point on the top of the Ranch! That means that the top area of the Ranch will have free wifi available during our season. This will be available to visitors, volunteers and vendors through the normal week and for special event weekends.
If you are looking for something interesting to do in town this week, check out a new exhibit at the Center for Contemporary Arts called The Due Return. Some of the Las Golondrinas staff have gone and really enjoyed it. It opened this past Friday and will run through July 10th.

The Children are Coming!
This week marked the first week of our "Spanish Colonial Days" program for school children. It took place on Tuesday and Thursday and we hosted over 2,500 children. It went quite smoothly and was a great first run of the season for a lot of our volunteers and staff, as it was the biggest group of visitors yet this season. We are looking forward to at least the same number of children, teachers and parents next week as well!
We had some visitors last week that wrote about their experience at the Ranch on their blog. Take a look: Five Star Foodie. There are some great pictures of the Ranch. Are you on our email list yet? Why not? Sign up here... Thats all for this week... Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Easter!
We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter week! Here's a new picture of our spring chicks, they are getting big! Speaking of chicks... Las Golondrinas is gearing up for our first Set of Spanish Colonial Days, four days over two weeks where the ranch gets taken over by school children. We are expecting over 6,000 this month, which is a record number! Call the Tour Office for more details if you are interested in bringing your school group out for these exciting couple of days, 505-473-4169.
The staff and volunteers have been busy preparing the Ranch for opening! May is still guided tours by reservation, call 505-473-4169 for information and to book. We've had a lot of different groups come in to utilize the ranch this spring, school tours, painting and birding mainly. Its miraculous how the ranch wakes up from its winter's sleep and the color and life comes back to the valley. When you visit this year, look for the exhibit changes we've been working on, especially in the Madrid house and the General Store. Our exhibit on the Pure Spanish Horse will be open for Civil War weekend, May 14th and 15th.
Also, if you are looking for interesting things to do around town this month, we have a few suggestions. Check out a new tour downtown called Food Tour New Mexico, it is an all inclusive walking tour of the downtown area with six tasty stops. Check out their website for more details. May 7th, Join Friends of Archaeology for the Glorieta Field Trip: Civil War in New Mexico Program, which includes an archaeological tour of the Pecos National Monument, including areas not normally open to the public. There are also Civil War related events this whole month, presented by the Friends of Archaeology, check out this site for more details. Email us if you have an event coming up that you think we should feature!

Spring is in Full Swing!
This past week we've noticed the trees have really begun to turn green again, and life has returned to the acequia. The seeds have been planted down at the cold frame and there also are some new little additions to the golondrinas family, its rewarding to watch these chicks grow and develop. We'll post more pictures to track their progress weekly.
We've also added a PDF copy of the Tour Guide Book to the Tour section of the website, you can find it here. Now when you come visit us you'll have your own copy of the guide book to print out and take notes on, or download to your smartphone or iPad. The schedules for "Battlefield New Mexico-The Civil War and More," our Civil War weekend and "Spring Festival" are up too, check those out to see whats happening at those two events. All of you web-savvy patrons, have you checked out Groupon? Keep a look out for deals from Las Golondrinas and other noteworthy places in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
This week we also installed the exhibit on the Spanish Horse in the founders room. It is slated to be open for Civil War weekend and is a must see... full of useful information about the Spanish horse, tack, clothing and traditions. Keep an eye out for the Spanish horses riding around at events this year, truly amazing creatures!
The Madrid house had a facelift over the winter. It has a new color on the outside, a picket fence, new color in the living room, new drapes and bedspreads and the furniture has been rearranged. Check out the changes this season. This building was built as a film set in 1979, and is depicting a coal miner's home in Madrid, New Mexico, a little ways south on highway 14 from Las Golondrinas. The Madrid house is interesting because it is always being used in film shoots and therefore always evolving!
Spanish Colonial Days, for school children, are quickly approaching! This spring they will be May 3rd, 5th, 10th, and 12th. We are expecting over 5,500 children! If you are interested in getting involved call Jessie at the tour office, (505)-473-4169.

Season's Start
This week Las Golondrinas opened for guided tours by reservation, the start of our season! Although there are still some ongoing projects the staff is working on to get the Ranch ready, we are excited to welcome in some of the first visitors of the 2011 season and look forward to the coming events. Our first event is Battlefield New Mexico, on May 14th and 15th, 10am - 4pm. You can download the schedule of events right under the calendar listing. If you're interested in booking at guided tour, please call the Tour Office at (505)-473-4169.
We are also making a lot of progress on the two changing exhibits we have for the 2011 season. The main exhibit hall, or the Hacienda Exhibit Hall, will host "Highlights from History" an exhibition of some of the most fascinating objects in the museum's collection. These items include textiles, ceramics, agricultural implements, elements of the religious life on the ranch, and more... things that rarely see the light of day. The Founder's Room exhibit space (attached to the chapel) will host an exhibit on the Spanish Horse, put together by The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse, which is based in Albuquerque. This exhibit is slated to be installed in the coming week, so we'll post some pictures and updates on the progress next week.

Lights, Camera... Hey... Was that a Panther?!
The last two weeks have been non-stop for The Ranch! We had two NBC shows come in and shoot. Both were shot at the Madrid House. The first was a pilot, called "Crossing" or "Reconstruction", the name keeps changing. It is set in post Civil War Missouri and follows the main character, a young war veteran, as he stumbles upon a sleepy town on his move west. A love story develops between two of the characters. The Madrid House was used as "Telford's" house, the Preacher. If the show gets picked up, Telford will be a reoccurring character and there is a good possibility that it will continue to be filmed at Las Golondrinas. The show stars //www.imdb.com/name/nm0376540/ as Jason Eddings. Rachelle Lefevre ("Twilight" - Victoria, "Off the Map") as Anna. Emma Bell ("Final Destination 5", "The Walking Dead") as Rachel. There were also two black panthers that came and shot, although at times they were uncooperative, the cats were really interesting to see up close.
The second week we hosted "In Plain Sight", a popular Albuquerque based show that can be seen on the USA Network. It stars Mary McCormack ("ER" and "The West Wing") as Marshal Mary Shannon, and Frederick Weller ("The Good Wife" and "Law and Order") as Marshal Marshall Mann. They are U.S. Marshals who work in the witness protection program who spend their time relocating federal witnesses. The episode that was shot at the Ranch was based around a young Amish girl who witnesses a murder by a gang of bikers. It was shot in the Rye field below the Morada, the Big Mill (which was sided in red wood to reflect Pennsylvania), and the Madrid House.
The Madrid House underwent a vast array of changes for the two shoots, starting with a coat of paint on the outside, which will stay. For "Crossing", the interior was dark sage and wallpapered with a red flower pattern. The furnishings were 1860-1880's and looked great in the house. For "In Plain Sight", the interior was painted a teal and the furnishings were shaker and simple, to reflect an Amish home and lifestyle. There was a picket fence added to the outside of the property, that we decided to keep for at least this season. The living room of the house has been restored to a light sage wall, which complements the museum's furnishings for the regular season. There are new drapes throughout thanks to the Curtain Cowboy and the two productions. The two brass beds have new bedspreads and there are new props and furnishings added to our Madrid House collection.
